5 Great UI Pattern Resources
As we go hurling down the road of RIA innovation it's nice to have some guidelines and tools to help us create better user experiences. I think user interface design patterns should in everyone's toolbox. They help us come up with new ideas for our UIs, it helps us communicate inside and outside of our team and finally it helps us to avoid common pitfalls.

The first time I ever went to conference, I was amazed at what I could learn in such a short amount of time. One such conference is coming up at the end of this month: 360Flex Atlanta. At the end of this month (February 25-27th), many of the best Flex developers are descending on Atlanta to present information about the leading edge of Flex (and AIR) applications. Speakers include: Ben Forta, Jesse Warden, Christophe Coenraets, Doug McCune, Juan Sanchez, and a few members of the Flex team (and that's just to name a few).

Late last week I discussed the launch of Jaxer by Aptana. Jaxer's idea is simple. Take the same JavaScript knowledge you use in building rich internet applications and apply them to the server side as well. I've taken some time to play more with Jaxer and I'd like to show some of what I've learned so far.

So if we are talking about supply and demand we have to define the two sides of the equation. The demand side is outside-in, it is the emergence of an "Experience Oriented Market" within a vertical. The supply side is inside-out, and it is called Design Maturity.

The web has moved beyond the traditional website into an entirely new arena. Desktop-capable web applications are emerging for nearly every industry.

A few areas that seem to be exceptionally "hot" include Productivity Applications, Graphics Applications, Mapping, Internet TV, Integrated Development Environments, Messaging and Analytical Applications.

At Web Directions North this week, taking place in the beautiful city of Vancouver, Canada, InsideRIA's very own Andre Charland will be presenting a session on Adobe AIR. Walter Smith will also be taking part in this session to talk about Microsoft Silverlight.

According to ComputerWorld Adobe AIR is going 1.0 next month with some nice big customers validating the technology to boot! The 1.0 release of the product is always an exciting and tense time, so having a huge customer like Nasdaq betting on it day one is a huge win for the platform.

Anatomy of an Enterprise Flex RIA Part 2: Running the Sample Code
In the last installment of our Development Series Anatomy of an Enterprise Flex RIA, we looked at the tools we'll be discussing in this series. Now we're going to look at the sample code that uses those tools as a way to show Flex working in an enterprise setting. Ready to dig in? We've got sample code and full specs...

One thing that has always fascinated me with Flex/Flash is the power of native graphics APIs built into the Flash player. These graphics APIs enable dynamic charting, skinning, programmatic drawing, among countless other features, but for now I want to focus on one technique that seems strangely under-used in Flex: Graphics Masks.

The reason I say "Whose Coat is this Jacket" is because if everyone uses the term application or website to describe everything, then it really means nothing at all. That gives us no basis on which to form judgment on whether or not deploying rich user interfaces makes sense. Without a hard definition of "true functionality", we are unequipped to create any kind of real distinction between the two terms to try and make sense of it all.
