Here's the third installment of my mini-series on Flex graphics tricks. These do not only apply to Flex, they apply to Flash as well. My particular focus here is using graphics filters within a Flex application. Graphics filters allow you to perform bitmap-level effects on any DisplayObject... thus any object that can be displayed in Flex. Filters enable everything from blurs, glows, and dropshadows all the way to color processing, sharpening, and edge detection. This sounds very daunting, however they are really pretty easy to get started with.

What flavor of RIA are you using? I'm doing a bit of research with the crew at Nitobi and we've put together a quick, informal survey about web design and development tools and platforms. It's only 14 short answer and multiple choice questions, and focuses on how designers and developers are adopting RIA technologies and tools.

In this post we take a deeper look at what Flex is and what it can do. Our goal is to provide a clear picture of the environment in which you use Flex to create Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). Fist, let's have a quick discussion about the nature of RIAs so that we can understand why we would want to use Flex in the first place.

In my last post, I discussed how ColdFusion aids RIA developers, both Flash/Flex as well as AJAX developers. I focused on serving data up to RIA consumers. In this entry, I'm going to discuss other Ajax features, most of which help out on the front end of your web site, an area ColdFusion has traditionally stayed away from (which makes sense as a back-end development platform).

Anatomy of an Enterprise Flex RIA Part 5: Build Life Cycle
The last installment offered a guided tour of our project's structure, with an in-depth look at the three child projects and the project dependencies. In this installment of the Anatomy of an Enterprise Flex RIA we’ll take a look at the Maven build lifecycle and where the tests are located in our sample application. Join in our development exercise, every Monday.

One of the most useful and exciting elements of the AIR API is the Update capability. This capability is further enhanced by the freedom AIR gives the developer in how to integrate this functionality. Update support within AIR is handled by the flash.desktop.Updater class (note that this is in the flash.desktop package and not flash.system from some of the earlier beta versions of AIR).

Given that I believe RIA technologies should only be used to improve usability and user experience in web software, I'm ecstatic that the role of the usability specialist is getting wide spread attention. It gained a spot in the U.S News list of Best Careers for 2008.

In this article I'm going to discuss ColdFusion and what it has built in to enable RIA development. I'm going to focus (mainly) on what ships with the server out of the box. I'm also curious as to what PHP and .Net ships with to help RIA developers. I'm (obviously) a CF guy and will admit I know little about PHP and .Net, so if you are a developer with RIA experience in that area, drop me a line at my blog as I'd like to follow this article up with details about those platforms.

The Web Directions North 08 event was great with an amazing cross section of speakers from a wide range of fields related to RIA. From Jared Spool's talk on usability to Douglas Crockford famous Ajax security talk. I thought it would be handy to post links to a few of the presentations that are online.

2008 will for many enterprises be the Decision Year for their choice of RIA platform, and AJAXWorld Conference & Expo 2008 (March 18-20, 2008) is the place to be if you want easy access under one roof to a welter of resources, ideas and examples to help you decide.
