Silverlight Available on Mobile Devices

Scott is announcing that Silverlight will be available on mobile devices. Windows Mobile 6, of course. But also "other platforms" as well. This is an area where Microsoft and Adobe are on a more equal footing as they enter the market for rich internet applications.

Guthrie says Microsoft wants Silverlight on as many devices as possible. As announced yesterday, Nokia will add Silverlight as an application on its S60, S40 and Mobile Internet tablet products. Tamir Melamed from WeatherBug is demoing a Silverlight application running on Symbian on a Nokia S60.

AOL is building its next email client using Silverlight 2. There will be a detailed walkthrough session later this week.

Silverlight & Olympic Apps

MSNBC is building an application for the Beijing Olympics which will make live streaming of all events available, along with tons of user interaction available. 2200 hours of broadcasting over 17 days. Henry Miller senior VP says the network chose Silverlight because its support for user interaction is so good and because they liked the quality of the media player.

The Microsoft Silverlight team is helping to build the app and given how little time is left between now and the Olympics, you have to wonder if this could end up affecting the Silverlight 2 release schedule.

Way Cool Demo

Hard Rock Cafe has just demoed a way cool Silverlight application that uses Sea Dragon technology for navigating through huge collections of images. Very impressive. Tons of applause. Check out their History of Rock and Roll running at HardRock.com. Microsoft is shipping software that lets developers create collections of photos and them present them so they can be manipulated in the same way, as demoed by HardRock.

SharePoint Extensions

Scott has just announced some SharePoint extensions that will allow Silverlight apps to be embedded on SharePoint pages. No surprise here either, given that SharePoint is built on ASP.NET.

Cirque de Soleil & Silverlight

Krista Monson, casting director for Cirque de Soleil, is on stage demoing an HR application built with Silverlight. She's interviewing Scott Guthrie for a role in one of their shows. She collects some data on a tablet PC and then loads a video of Scott juggling two balls on stage. Lots of data visualizations and video in the app. The Cirque de Soleil app is built with WPF, needed for use offline. Cirque de Soleil has 22000 names in its database.
