merapicup.jpgMerapi, the framework to enable integration between Java and AIR at the desktop, was released in Alpha on Monday, July 14th. You can find out more and sign up for an account at www.merapiproject.net. I'm still hoping to add a lot of key features to the framework, but felt it was long enough of a wait for the 200+ people that have signed up to be a part of the alpha testing. We're looking forward to all of the quality feedback and blog posts to come in the following week. This release has been a long time coming for my friend Dave Meeker and myself. Thanks for bearing with and helping get this thing out the door Dave!

what is AIR?

Adam Flater said:

@Daniel

AIR is an acronym for Adobe Integrated Runtime. AIR is a mechanism for deploying Adobe Flash / Flex applications (as well as Ajax) on the desktop. AIR adds some desktop APIs, file system access, SQLLite engine, and a few more. You can find out more at: http://www.adobe.com/products/air/

Great initiative Adam! Going to watch this one closely :-).
Thanks for all the effort.

very cool! can you post some working samples and related write ups here?

Very cool! Does Merapi take care of getting the required version of the Java JRE to the desktop? Is it using webstart, an applet container JRE, or some other mechanism?

Adam Flater said:

@Andre Charland

For sure.. it's coming..

Adam Flater said:

@Anonymous

No, this framework is for building desktop apps that use the installed JRE on the system. The same constraints around building a desktop deployed Java application exist here.

Sorry for lagging... "AIR" stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime. If you do a Google search for "Adobe Flex AIR" you'll find many resources on the topic, included this site. ;)

Adam,
how much Merapi is different then using AIR and Blazeds to talk with Java ?

Adam Flater said:

@Alessandro

It should be much simpler. Merapi will be much lighter weight, as it's just a simple socket server. Also, the configuration will be really easy to use out of the box. Merapi doesn't implement Flash Remoting, but it has features that are very similar and in some ways go beyond remoting.

When I start to post code Merapi code samples on this blog I think the differences will be clear.

thanks

May be to you, but not to the rest of the internet folk. Bit tip - add lots of help links and possibly tutorials, don't let the jargon get ahead of the understanding of the product- thats key.
