I was fortunate to be part of an interview with David Heinemeier Hansson, or DHH, co-founder of 37signals and inventor of the popular Ruby on Rails framework. The interview happened a few weeks ago for the User Interface Resource Center and covered a variety of topics - everything from simplicity to software development process to the best way to create custom experiences.
While I don't know that every specific aspect of David's methods are appropriate for every industry, he offers some great and often provocative thoughts about how to creatively disrupt the long-stagnant software development process by getting more done quickly. I think it's especially hard to apply his ideas wholesale to client services companies, though he certainly defines some good principals all software or experienced based companies can learn from.
I feel like in the past David has come across as sort of a jerk in interviews - I'm happy to say he's anything but. Wired in particular portrayed him as "brash" and enjoyed quoting his profanity. David was extremely pleasant to talk to and very interested in our conversation. He's a great guy and a loud voice in our industry, and it was a pleasure to talk with him. Kudos to my good friend Brad Umbaugh for running such a great interview.
