Actionscript 3

I recently had the chance to chat with JavaFX team members Josh Marinacci and Jacob Lehrbaum on a conference call. I had the chance to ask them all of the questions that you guys submitted here on the site.

The interview is 25 minutes and the guys cover everything from the basics of JavaFX to future plans for the platform.

I certainly hope and believe that JavaFX will bring more to the world than what these guys managed to communicate in this cast.

As it would seem, judging from this, the biggest strength of JavaFX is that one will be able to leverage code from previous java projects. I do expect more from it, if not in the first release, at least soon.

I love, by the way, how at one point they seemed to completely forget about Flash/AIR when talking about how with JavaFX, for the first time will developers be able to create apps that can be used both on the desktop and in the browser. :)

Thanks a lot to David, Josh and Jacob!

The desktop mention is actually quite significant.
With JavaFX you can literally drag the RIA front the browser to the desktop and the RIA instantly becomes a desktop app.
With Flex you have to first build the swf for web and then if you wanted a desktop version of the same thing would have to convert it into an air file (at simplest level create the app descriptor and build) and then offer the air file as a separate download.
Off the top of my head I can think of no other RIA technology that allows you to do what JavaFX does re drag the RIA straight to desktop and hey presto you have a desktop app.

Shame no talk of mobile - or did I just fall asleep!
