FEATURED: Flash Player vs. Silverlight
Technologies: Silverlight, Flash PlayerThis week saw another huge news event distributed with Microsoft Silverlight: The Democratic National Convention. Several bloggers including John Wilker, one of the guys behind 360 Conferences, points out that Adobe seems to be falling behind in these high-profile events. Some people say that Microsoft is only getting these opportunities because they pay large amounts of money to get them. Other people feel that Adobe is not asserting itself in these situations.

Whats the flash player's impact after the release of Google Chrome, is it threat?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_chrome#Plugins
I prefer not to do a great deal of speculation on products that have yet to be released - especially when they will be released in Beta. However, in this case I will address it.
I fully expect that there will be a version of the Flash Player for Google Chrome in the future. Why? Because Google needs it. You don't have the full Internet without Flash. If Google actually wants people to use Google Chrome, they will have to find a way to get it to work. If they don't they will be cutting off access to the best RIA's on the market today (Photoshop Express, Buzzword, SlideRocket, Aviary, etc...). To me - this would be suicide for their browser.
In my opinion, if it doesn't have Flash, it won't be used.
since google chrome is going to use the webkit rendering engine, and i assume the spidermonkey jsvm, i imagine they'll probably just tap into the "plugin" version of the flash player, just like mozilla/safari/etc, right?
@Kyle - Google Chrome is using Webkit (although they are using a different JavaScript VM called V8 than Mozilla). In this case, the wikipedia entry that Joseph posted in his comment, highlights a few difficulties of using the Flash Player with Google Chrome. It is unclear (at this point) if the information in the Wikipedia article is correct.
I do believe that these issues will be addressed - and that the Flash Player will work with Chrome, but there may be some issues that need to be fixed.
I'm not sure what the fuss is about. So far Flash Player 10 beta is working just fine within Chrome for me.
Granted that it more than likely won't be running with the features of Chrome like sandboxing but the comic explains that part concerning plugins.
I've been running Chrome for about ten minutes (right now as a matter of fact) and a quick look around suggests that any site I normally go to works just fine, even with Flash. Plus my Yahoo Mail does seem to perform better but that's just on feeling and no real testing. The only complaint I have so far is that the level of options you can change on the browser is very limited.
@Travis - I agree. I noticed the same thing. This is an example of why it is not wise to discuss something before the details have been released. It appears that some of the early reports about Flash Player and Chrome issues were speculation rather than actual fact.
@David - Wait, you mean people treat speculation as fact on the Internet? Surely you jest!
In fact, I've seen that my usual media plugins (Quicktime, Media Player, Flash) have worked just fine with nothing required from me to get them to work. So I'm guessing it figures out what plugins you already have installed from other browsers and uses those. I'm now wondering if there is a plugin that doesn't work.
@Travis:
Java did not work from the start on my computer (Windows XP) and doing a Google search showed me that people had different problems when they tried to get it to run. When I tried to access a page with some Java, nothing happened, just a message that I don't have the appropriate plugin installed.
Someone on the web suggested to add a new entry to the Chrome MIME types XML file (pointing to the JRE 6u10 installer) but that didn't really work for me either. It downloaded the JRE and appeared to install it from inside Chrome but the Java web page still showed the previous error message, this time just asking again if I want to download and install JRE 6u10.
I only managed to get it to run when I downloaded the JRE 6u10 installer separately and then started Chrome.
