Poll Results: How do you go about creating the design of your applications?

The majority of our poll respondents either create the design of applications themselves (over 55%) or they have an in house staff (over 35%) that creates the design. This is quite an overwhelming percentage. In fact there were only 3.5% who selected the use an external agency choice. With so many of you working on the design and user experience of RIA applications, perhaps we should be focusing more on producing content that addresses these topics. What are your thoughts? Would you like to see more on design and user experience?

Of course, Rich. Should be very helpful!

Absolutely. I'm always interested in hearing how others approach design and UX for their RIAs and would be happy to share how we do it.

No, I don't think you should do more on design/ UX as there are many sites out there already catering for that and it would dilute the focus.

I follow this blog/ you on twitter to get concentrated RIA goodness. For UX there's inspireux.com, graphpaper.com, smashingmagazine.com to name but three.

Just my 2p!

The fact that over 50% of applications are designed by the developers that build them is not that surprising. Unfortunately, that is the reason why many applications don't meet their users' needs. At the very least, it would be useful to have some content on this site regarding how best to work with UX designers. Many developers probably wish they didn't have to do this work themselves anyway.

@Rob,

The poll results don't necessarily say that over 50% of developers do their own design as we certainly have designers visiting as well.

Here Here Rich! I'm an owner of a web studio and even though I'm a designer, I'm also generally the overall project manager on our RIA projects as well. I find InsideRIA to be a useful resource and I don't think adding UX context/techniques/strategies is a bad thing at all. I think that good programming goes hand in hand with good UX and find it's useful as a professional to keep your head in both worlds to some degree. Especially with "rich" applications as part of the unique nature of a RIA is the user experience itself.

Good point Rich. That might be an good idea for a poll as well. I would be interested to know if you get more designers or developers visiting.
