New Poll: What's Your Favorite Sci-Fi Movie of All Time?

Well, we are nearing the midway point of the year, so we thought it would be fun to have a non tech poll, that is simply for fun. Let me start by saying that I am not a big fan of sci-fi movies, and I didn't come up with the list of choices. So, I am sure there are many missing from the list. Please go ahead and leave any missing selections you would like to see in comments and I'll try to get them added.

With that being said, our poll question this week is very simple, What's Your Favorite Sci-Fi Movie of All Time? To take part in this poll, please click here.

UPDATE: I just voted for Matrix. How could I not when I just named my new baby girl Trinity last week. :-)

Blade Runner is not on the list? Really?

ejb said:

is the matrix not a sci-fi film???

Pablo said:

In my opinion, Terminator II

Kevin Suttle said:

The first Matrix. Hands down.

No "The Matrix"... why not?

samBrown said:

Kubrick's 2010 - hands down. Dude was pulling off some jaw dropping affects before the age of digital effects. They just don't make movies like that anymore.

benb said:

agree with john, where is Blade Runner?

polyGeek said:

I would vote for the Matrix trilogy as a whole or just as the first episode.

But why is Star Trek I is on the list? Whaaaaaat? Just because it's ST doesn't mean it doesn't suck. Same goes for any of the first 3 eps of StarWars - IMHO.

But Blade Runner, 2001, 2010, Terminator I/II, Aliens, should all be on the list. And I'm still missing a bunch.

But don't worry. You can't have any poll dealing with anything related to SciFi without offending someone. Like what's the best space ship? "OMG, you left off the Defant? You moron! That's the best ship pound for pound in the entire galaxy."

I have no doubt that some geek has commented that somewhere at some time in response to that polling question. :)

samBrown said:

whoops, clearly Kubrick did 2001........

@polyGeek - lol!

Poleholio said:

These poles are really bad. Please make a choice from this limited selection so we can learn absolutely nothing about anything except the ineptitude of the person conducting them.

SilverLight of Microsoft !!

And what about Blade Runner ?? :-)

Adi R said:

Total Recall
Matrix came later, close contender

Ross R said:

Very surprised that Blade Runner and the Matrix trilogy did not make that list.

Especially as Blade Runner is widely regarded as the best sci-fi movie of all time.

Scott H. said:

My favorite? The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. There's nothing cooler than Buckaroo.

The best, it's gotta be Blade Runner.

Thanks for your comments, we added these to the list:

Blade Runner
The Matrix
Terminator
Terminator II
2010
Aliens

@polyGeek, love your space ship poll!

You have 2010 instead of 2001

Solaris - the Soderbergh/Clooney remake, not the interminable original (although that did have a cool synth soundtrack)

Of all time? Might take some flak for this, but it also has to do with the age I was at when I first saw it. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Michael Duerr said:

Gattaca

Narrowly edging out: Outland, Bladerunner, Andromeda Strain

Honorable mentions to Rollerball, Logan's Run, Buckaroo Banzai, Farenheit 451, Dune, Total Recall, Johnny Mnemonic, Impostor, Dr Strangelove, Slaughterhouse 5

It would seem I have a fondness for dystopias, at least in my SciFi ...

Amol Mittal said:

Gattaca should definitely be on the list.
But i really like 12 Monkeys a lot as well.

Steve W said:

Aside from the obvious favorites mentioned above, you need to add Silent Running and Soylent Green to the list. @Clayton, for pure entertainment, Bill and Ted is a good choice.

Steve W said:

I forgot to add Independence Day and Men in Black which were great in their own right.

Escape from New York!

What about -

Dune, the Fifth Element, Screamers, Total Recall, Twelve Monkeys, Wall-E.

Brazil of course. Followed by Blade Runner.

No "2001: A Space Odyssey"? Whether or not it's a person's favourite, it certainly should be the first on any list of science fiction films. It's like having a "Favourite Civil War Films Starring Clark Gable" poll and omitting "Gone with the Wind".

Which version of of The Day the Earth Stood Still do you mean? Clearly the recent one has no place on a poll about "best" films (even "best Keanu Reeves films"), but the original certainly has a place on this list.

Which version of Planet of the Apes? the 1968 one might qualify for this list; the Tim Burton one surely does not.

No Invasion of the Body Snatchers (either '56 or '78 version should qualify for this list).

Other glaring omissions:
No 12 Monkeys.
No Gattaca.
No 28 Days Later...
No The Thing (Carpenter version; the Hawkes version is a bit daft).
No Solyaris (I disagree with the earlier poster that the remake should be considered over the original, but hey).

It's hard to take this poll seriously (even as seriously as a throw-away poll on "favourite CF films" should be taken, I mean).

Oh... and for my money: it's Alien.

Also missing (shocked I am, shocked :-) )

The Abyss
The Thing
Toys (might be stretching 'scifi')
Small Soldiers

And why everybody seems to forget Minority Report?

randygland said:

Because Minority Report was poo.. and i agree with the guy that said you should probably stick to writing polls you actually know something about.

Robby the Robot.

RESIDENT EVIL {almost all parts}.....

itz aWesome, movie must see !!

solerous said:

Serenity.

It's not even on the list, but it's my favorite Sci-fi movie of all time and nothing else even comes close. And I say that as a big Sci-fi fan.
