Something you might not be aware of is that the part of Comcast that I work for is all open source. We use open source technology, we open source projects, we're even all on Macs which is something new for me, but seems like a very nice GUI on a Unix box. I've expressed my love for Eclipse many times here already, if not in my articles then in responses and comments in other threads.

So I was really excited to discover Eclipse Tools for Microsoft Silverlight. Having transitioned from a near Microsoft-centric career into an open source shop right around the time Silverlight came out, I never had the chance to really dig into the technology. But this plugin should have given me the perfect opportunity to play with it, and to recommend Silverlight if it's an appropriate solution.

It ran beautifully on my home laptop which is a PC, I followed all of the instructions and got the hello world example up and running. Unfortunately I couldn't get a project to build on my work MacBook Pro - maybe because the Mac version is a "Customer Technology Preview" - so it's not a seamless, perfect solution yet, but I'm excited to see the direction the project is heading and will definitely be following its progress.

If you, or anyone, knows of a better open source solution, I'd love to hear about it and try it out

I have tried this. The editor for C# is not support quite good like Visual Studio. (sure, because it is not commercial). I think this Silverlight editor can spread more faster to developer community by provide rich feature similar to Visual studio.
