I read today that a new version of Unity, a 3D Platform for the web, was released yesterday. It is full of new features, but most importantly, it is now free. I've been meaning to download the trial and experiment with this for a while... Now that it is free, there's no longer the worry about the trial expiration.

From the site:

Unity is now available at no cost at http://unity3d.com/unity/download to make it possible for all developers to get access to the best development platform available.

Unity Pro, Unity Wii, Unity iPhone Basic, and Unity iPhone advanced are not free, however you should still be able to plenty of cool things on the web with the free version.

Press Release:

New Features:

Download It Here:

I've gone ahead and installed it to see what it is capable of... let's hope I can come up with some good examples for insideria.com. :-)

This seems like a pretty big move. Obviously, this should greatly increase the number of developers and in turn content utilizing the player. I remember when I first heard about Unity (Feb 2009) and was blown away. Not much of a games guy anymore but the game Blush at http://blurst.com/blush/ is sick, great design, concept, and execution, just plain cool and original..

That game is pretty good. The quality of graphics is exceptional.

Did you guys notice the announcement on 11/6/2009 that the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) is available for free now? http://www.udk.com/index.html This looks like hot competition for Unity3d.
