It's likely that if you're interested in learning about Flex, you've already downloaded and experimented with Flex Builder 3. In the next few posts we'll be exploring Flex Builder. We'll start with the installation, and then go into more depth as we explain how the premiere tool for building Flex applications works. We've already made mention of the fact that Flex Builder is based on Eclipse, and we'll be discussing this useful tool as well.

Just as the Flex cookbook gave the community a great way to get involved with an O'Reilly book, the Adobe AIR Cookbook will give just as many opportunities. Over the next weeks I will be giving all of you many ways that you can get involved with this book. Right now, we are looking for technical editors.

UPDATE: Thanks to all who submitted their name for consideration. We have received quite a large response. If additional information is needed from you, you will be contacted directly.

If you haven't yet heard of or installed the demo of Yahoo! BrowserPlus sneak peek, prepared to be both amazed and a little scared at the same time.

Microsoft recently announced demos of two exciting Ruby on Rails developments. The first is a Silverlight application integrated with Ruby on Rails and the second is a demo of Microsoft's .NET Rails implementation, somewhat weirdly named "IronRuby." In this entry we'll discuss the announcement, Microsoft's implementation of Rails, and provide some resources for getting started in your own Rails education.

For those of us who work with RIA's, Acrobat.com is finally a great example of what we know is possible. Complete platform integration across multiple online services to deliver a fully-functional and engaging experience for the end user - both through the browser and on the desktop.

This was announced officially and at Google I/O this week. They've announced upcoming pricing for extra computing power. So head on over and check it out. For more info about App Engine check out my previous post and interview with Dion Almaer from Google.

Yesterday, Google released the Google Earth API. This is basically a browser plugin for Google Earth. I have to admit, I was blown away when I saw it in action. Microsoft Virtual Earth beat Google to it with web based 3d maps, but Google is going to give them a run for their money.

RIA developers, of the Ajax variety in particular, should be excited to see what's coming down the pipe from Adobe's Creative Suite Teams. Dreamweaver has been waiting for a massive overhaul for some time now. It looks like it will really start to fill the void in Ajax tool space. The Live View I think might be the start of that, out of the box code hinting for a few popular Ajax libraries doesn't hurt either. It looks like they're trying to give us some nice prototyping features in Fireworks which sounds kind of interesting too.

There were more demos and announcements at JavaOne this year about JavaFX. Josh Marinacci and I were both part of the RIA Discussion that was hosted by RedMonk during CommunityOne. In this podcast Josh and I talk about what's coming in the July SDK release, JavaSE 6, the new applets and where JavaFX fits into the big picture of RIA.

With all this talk about Astro, and PixelBender, it made me think more about graphics filters. So, I thought I'd revisit them. A few months back, I did a series on graphics tricks. This time, I'm sticking to the good old filters (not the shiny new ones in PixelBender), and decided to focus on displacement map filters. Basically, the displacement map filter displaces the pixels of a component, based on the bitmap data that is passed into the filter.
