While many Flash/Flex/Air developers are waiting for AS3 support, which no one has exposed a convincing argument for it, old timers Flash Lite developers are publishing their Flash Lite content portfolio on the Nokia Publish for OVI service.

Nokia is about to launch their mobile content store, OVI Store, on a global scale. For Flash Lite content developers.

Nokia is the largest mobile manufacturer in the world with almost %40 of the global market and close to %60 of smartphone market.

Now it seems that everything is coming together, with money sponsoring Flash Lite developers, new contests for Flash Lite developers and a direct channel to reach mobile users.

If you are not convinced here are some impressive numbers and news:

Nokia has 300M Flash Lite enabled phones in the market.

$10M Open Screen Project fund: Adobe and Nokia

$100,000 Flash Lite Developer Challenge

Call All Innovators: Flash category, check this video

Look at these videos from the Nokia Developer Summit 2009, Flash Lite took central stage from Nokia exec for the first time that I remember. Why? It runs on all Nokia handsets. Yes there are variations in version, content type and so on, but the development cost is a fraction of other technologies which allows content publishers to go to market faster.

Let's see what will happen in the coming weeks!

My convincing argument is that I just hate writing Actionscript in versions previous to AS3. The key word is 'hate'. I don't enjoy it.

I don't like investing time in code that can't fit into my existing libraries.

Writing for Flash Lite is something I don't need to do because I'm already inundated with work. And why would I go for Nokia's platform when I can and do already write for the iPhone?

And lastly, I don't believe that Nokia etc. have a great future, I don't like their phones (and haven't for many years) and I don't like their platform. Nokia seems to me to be one of those companies who were raking in so much cash for so long, they forgot to do anything interesting. Long before the iPhone came along, Nokia had already suffered creative death and will find it as hard to reverse course as it would be to reverse an oil tanker.

From where I'm standing, that's convincing enough.

Hi Natasha,

I've never heard anyone describe coding Actionscript 2.0 hateful before :-)

If you're creating applications for the iPhone market segment then that's fine, but remember the choices of the majority; they aren't in love with, nor can they afford, the iPhone.

Ultimately if you're happy with your current order book then that's brilliant, maybe you can look at developing your mobile development skills using AS3 later in the year.

well, still not convinced!
If you do not develop for a platform because you do not like the coding is really your preference. The library factor makes more sense.

My suggestion to all the Flash developers that want to get into mobile development is to try to create something. The technology is not the real problem. The mobile ecosystem is more a challenge then coding.

Not really interested in the iPhone argument because I know very few developers who have a business around it.

Its very hard to find a quality designer these days that doesnt want to charge you a arm and a leg. Thanks for the great post.
